Chapter Sixteen

DESPITE HER PROTESTS, Dylan walked her to the front door. As they arrived, it opened, and neither her father nor David looked pleased.

Before this thought had fully registered in her brain, Dylan dragged her close, kissing her with finesse. This time his breath was minty fresh. His silver-blue eyes danced with mischief when he finally broke the kiss, leaving her breathless. His hand remained on her cheek, and his thumb brushed over her tingling lips.

“In case you decide to marry me, I thought I’d better show your old man how much I care about you,” he whispered.

She stared, mute. Did he care about her? Or was this part of the plan?

“Cat’s taking me to pick up my glasses, so text me. Regardless, I’ll see you at six.”

Did he say sex? No six. Dazed, she simply nodded.

“Jennifer Adams, if you’re through making a spectacle of yourself, I’d like to speak to you. Now!”

Her father’s voice snapped her out of her kiss-induced reverie, and she scampered through the door, dreading the lecture. Her mind raced in a vicious circle. Photos, marriage, Dylan, seductive kisses, legal teams…

“David, if you’ll excuse us—”

The doorbell rang, and her father answered it. Jennifer panicked for a moment; surely Dylan wasn’t back to stir up more trouble. Still, the momentary reprieve from the inevitable I’m so disappointed in you lecture was welcome.

Unfortunately, the door opened to something far worse. Mrs. Baxter, renowned church gossip and Jennifer’s least favorite member of their congregation, stood before them, a gleam in her beady eyes.

“Hello, Mrs. Baxter, how are you?…Yes, that was Jennifer and her, uh, friend…”

The sound of her father’s voice became muffled as he escorted the busybody into his study. She sighed; Mrs. Baxter made the tabloids look like rank amateurs when it came to spreading rumors and innuendos.

“So where did you and Dylan go?” David asked from behind her.

David! She’d forgotten about him. Jennifer bit her lip and looked away, flushing with guilt when she saw the concern and hurt on his face.

“Just to the park. He let me drive his car. It’s a dream machine and really fast.” What an inane, stupid comment.

“I see,” he said as they sat at the kitchen table, awkward for the first time ever in each other’s presence.

“Jennifer…” He paused, running a hand over the table, as if pondering what to say.

“Yes?” Her heart sank at the resigned look in his beautiful eyes.

“I have a lot of years of schooling left, and I wanted to be out and settled before I spoke—”

Tears filled her eyes, and before he could continue, she put her fingers to his lips, shaking her head. She didn’t want to hurt him. But even if she refused Dylan’s so-called proposal, she knew it was over with David.

“He doesn’t deserve you.” David sighed, looking away.

She was spared having to respond by the reappearance of her father. He slipped his heart medication under his tongue, looking very tired and old.

“Sit down. Are you okay?” Jennifer sprang from her chair, checking his pulse.
